What is...
What is FTP?
FTP refers to the File Transfer Protocol, one of the protocols within the TCP/IP protocol suite used on the Internet. The File Transfer Protocol makes it possible
to transfer files from one computer (or host) on the Internet to another. There are many FTP implementations built on the specification of the FTP protocol. A user
of an FTP program must log in to both hosts in order to transfer a file from one to the other.
What is Chat or IRC?
IRC, short for Internet Relay Chat, offers a world-wide multi-user chat network, where people meet to talk in groups, or privately. Lots of people can participate
in the real time discussions, and the number of topics covered on IRC is endless. On IRC you'll meet people with the same ideas and interests, and making friends
for life is not unusual. IRC can host your business meetings and it can be your virtual hide-out!
What is a Browser?
WWW browsers have graphical interfaces and display pictures; in addition, applications viewed through browsers will become "point and click". Most of theses
browsers support HTML3 specifications, and some offer a lot more.
What is Telnet?
The telnet protocol is an application that logs on to other computers to obtain information. Both computers must use/support the telnet protocol in order for telnet
to work.
What is E-mail?
Electronic mail, or e-mail, allows a user on one computer to send a message to a user on another computer at another location.
What is Java?
Java is a language developed by Sun Microsystems which allows World Wide Web pages to contain code that is executed on the browser. Because Java is based on a single
"virtual machine" that all implementations of java emulate, it is possible for Java programs to run on any system which has a version of Java. It is also
possible for the "virtual machine" emulator to make sure that Java programs downloaded through the web do not attempt to do unauthorized things.
What is HTML?
The Hypertext Markup Language (or HTML) is the language used to create the documents for the World Wide Web. Although most browsers will display any document that
is written in plain text, there are advantages that you get by writing documents using HTML. When HTML documents are read by applications specifically designed for
the Web (usually called browsers or Web browsers) they can include formatting, graphics, and even links to other documents.
